A Warm Welcome to Thomasrescues
Emaciated and injured dogs, desperately begging for food and shelter: Every traveler to Greece has seen this heartbreaking sight. If they have a heart for suffering creatures, they are horrified and deeply affected. Thomas, originally from Nea Kallikratia in Greece, could no longer bear to witness the plight of these animals 20 years ago and decided to take action. He didn’t want to just talk about the suffering, he wanted to make a difference. Using his own money, Thomas paid for food, neutering, and medical treatments for stray dogs and cats. Soon, he was caring for over 150 animals every day.
In 2018, Thomas finally found a suitable place for himself and his charges. The animal shelter covers about 4000 square meters and provides a safe haven for approximately 100 dogs and 10 cats. The dogs live in 4 to 5 large groups in expansive areas with plenty of room to roam, while the cats have settled into a few cozy rooms inside the house. Of course, Thomas hasn’t forgotten the street animals; twice a day, he goes on feeding rounds to care for around 60 stray cats and 30 dogs. Thomas manages all of this on his own, occasionally receiving help from volunteers.
In addition to his direct work with the animals, Thomas raises awareness about animal welfare in his community and collaborates with the relevant authorities on animal protection matters. However, Thomas receives no support from the state, and his own resources are nearly depleted. He urgently needs our help. Every donation, no matter how small, is incredibly valuable to him, as it helps cover the shelter rent, monthly food costs, neutering, vaccinations, and medical emergencies.
